How Does Teachers Pay Teachers Work? A Simple Guide for New Sellers

If you’ve ever bought a lesson plan or activity on Teachers Pay Teachers and thought, “Wait – how does Teachers Pay Teachers work?” you’re not alone.

Whether you want to start selling your own resources to make extra vacation money or you are trying to leave the classroom entirely, I’m going to break down exactly how TPT works – without all the confusing business jargon.

Disclaimer: I’m not affiliated with TPT, and this isn’t legal or financial advice. This is simply my experience and research to help you understand how the platform works and what to know before you dive in.

This post contains affiliate links, which means I may earn a small commission (at no extra cost to you) if you choose to purchase through them. I only share products I truly love and recommend!

What Is Teachers Pay Teachers?

Teachers Pay Teachers (TPT) is an online marketplace where educators can buy and sell teaching resources. Think of it like Etsy, but for lesson plans, classroom games, and printable activities instead of crafts and jewelry.

I have a podcast episode answering all kinds of questions about TPT – you can listen here to learn what TPT is!

Over 7 million teachers use TPT to find ready-to-go lessons that save time and are engaging for their students. Teacher authors on the platform earn money every time another teacher purchases one of their digital products.

It’s a win-win: teachers save time, and the creators get paid for their hard work and expertise.

Want to hear what’s possible?!

Check out my podcast episode where I interview Ashlee Salhab, a real teacher who turned her classroom resources into a successful TPT store. You’ll get a behind-the-scenes look at how she started, what worked, and how she’s growing her income while also continuing to work full-time in the classroom.

How Does Selling on Teachers Pay Teachers Work?

When you create a TPT store, you will upload your own resources (PDFs, PowerPoints, digital activities, etc.) to the online marketplace.

Let’s jump into how you can get started!

Create an Account

TPT offers two ways to get started.

  • Basic Seller Account: The Basic Seller Account is a one-time fee of $29. With this account, you will earn 55% on all sales and have access to some sales analytics.
  • Premium Seller Account:  TPT also offers a Premium Seller Membership for $60 per year, which gives you a higher earnings rate (80% instead of 55%) and access to better analytics for your store.

If you want all the details on starting a TPT store, check out this podcast episode where I discuss what I would do if I had to start a TPT store from scratch!

Upload your resources

You’ll then need to create and add your resources to TPT. When you are creating your resources, make sure you are protecting them by flattening and securing!

Not only do you need to upload your resources, but you will also need to create titles, descriptions, and cover images.

Not sure where to start? You can learn how to make covers and thumbnails that sell right here!

Set your price

Pricing your products can be one of the hardest parts of starting TPT. You control how much your resource costs. Many sellers start with products priced between $3 – $10.

Make sales and earn income

When someone buys your resource, TPT automatically delivers it and handles the payment. You’ll get paid monthly.

TPT handles taxes and transactions

TPT collects and remits sales tax on your behalf for most U.S. states (they’re what’s called a marketplace facilitator). So you can focus on creating, not paperwork.

Even though TPT remits most of the sales tax, it is still important that you understand

sales tax as a TPT seller. If you need or want additional information on taxes for TPT sellers, check out my interview with Emily Bryant, a tax expert.

How Much Can You Make on Teachers Pay Teachers?

This depends on your niche, how many products you have, and how consistent you are at it. It is impossible to tell you how much money you will make when you start selling your resources on TPT.

Some sellers make a few extra hundred dollars a year, while others have turned it into a full-time business. The key is creating quality resources, optimizing them for search, and growing your store over time.

While I cannot make income guarantees, you can see an example of what is possible here

What Types of Resources Can You Sell on TPT?

You can sell anything that helps teachers on TPT! Some popular categories include:

  • Printable worksheets and activities
  • Digital resources for Google Classroom™
  • Interactive notebooks
  • Classroom decor
  • Assessments and quizzes
  • Teacher planners or data trackers

As long as your content is original (no copyrighted book pages or clipart without permission), you can sell it.

If you’re unsure about what’s allowed, check TPT’s Copyright and Trademark Guidelines or listen to my podcast episode on copyright for TPT sellers!

How TPT Supports Teachers and Sellers

TPT has built-in tools that make selling easier, including:

  • Automatic file delivery – no need to email files manually.
  • Customer Service – TPT handles customer service issues, such as troubleshooting technology and handling refunds.
  • Secure payments – TPT processes all buyer transactions.
  • Traffic and visibility – millions of teachers browse the site every month.

This means you don’t have to build your own website or worry about payment processors. TPT takes care of the behind-the-scenes logistics so you can focus on creating resources that help teachers and students around the world.

Is Teachers Pay Teachers Worth It?

Absolutely – if you’re willing to treat it like a real business.

If you’ve ever wondered whether TPT is really the best platform to start on, I can tell you from experience – it absolutely is.

It’s important to know that TPT isn’t a “get rich quick” platform, but it can be a life-changing side hustle or full-time income stream for teachers, tutors, homeschooling moms, and more!

The sellers who succeed long-term are those who:

  • Upload consistently
  • Listen to buyer feedback
  • Create resources that fill a real classroom need

If you love designing lessons, organizing classroom materials, or sharing your teaching ideas, TPT is one of the best ways to turn that creativity into income.

I know how scary it can feel to start something new – especially when you’re already juggling so much as a teacher.

But here’s the truth: you already have everything you need to succeed. Once you learn how TPT works, you can create a store that gives you more flexibility and financial freedom.

That’s exactly what I’ll teach you in my free training. You’ll learn how to set up your TPT store step by step, create profitable products, and start earning extra income from the work you already love doing.
