Investing in Your TPT Business: The Mindset Shift That Changes Everything

Teachers are naturally careful with money. We clip coupons, stretch classroom budgets, and think twice before splurging. I get it – because I was the exact same way. But here’s the truth that changed everything for me: there’s a big difference between spending money and investing in your TPT business.

When you spend, that money is gone. When you invest, you expect a return – whether that’s more sales, more time, or more peace of mind. And once I started looking at money this way, my whole business shifted.

My First Scary Investment

When I first started on TPT, even $60 for the premium membership felt huge. I literally asked for it as a birthday present because I wasn’t sure I could justify it.

But that one decision bumped my earnings from 55% to 80% of every sale. Looking back, it was the easiest “yes” ever – but at the time, I agonized over it.

That’s what so many teachers feel when they first start: Can I really spend this money? What if it doesn’t work?

I’ve been there. But I’ve learned that every smart investment I’ve made has paid me back, usually faster than I expected.

Why DIY Doesn’t Work Forever

I tried to DIY everything in the beginning – my website, my Facebook ads, and my covers and thumbnails.

And you know what?

  • My website looked awful.
  • My covers weren’t getting clicks.
  • And I wasted months trying to figure out things I could have learned in days if I’d had guidance.

The truth is: you’re already an expert – in your subject area, your grade level, your students. That’s where your energy should go. But running a business? That’s a whole new skill set. And you don’t have to figure it out alone.

What Investing Actually Looks Like

Investing doesn’t mean dropping thousands of dollars tomorrow. It means choosing to trade money for time, growth, and confidence.

Some examples:

  • Buying templates or software that make your resources look professional in half the time
  • Upgrading to TPT Premium so more of your money stays in your pocket
  • Joining a program (like The Resource Academy) where you get step-by-step training + feedback instead of trying to piece things together from YouTube. Make sure to watch my free training first!
  • Hiring a VA for a few hours to handle covers, previews, or uploads so you can focus on creating

“When You Pay, You Pay Attention”

One of my business coaches always says: When you pay, you pay attention. And it’s true.

Think about it – how many free PDFs have you downloaded but never used? Probably a lot. Now compare that to when you’ve actually paid for something. Suddenly you’re committed, because you’ve got skin in the game.

That’s the power of investing. It pulls you out of the “someday” mindset and into action.

Can You Afford to Stay Stuck?

IIf you’ve been thinking, I can’t afford to invest right now, I want to gently flip that question:

Can you afford to stay stuck?

  • Another year of trying to figure it all out alone
  • Another year of uploading resources that don’t sell
  • Another year of second-guessing yourself

Or… you could invest now, get support, and start seeing your store grow faster than you imagined.

Teachers aren’t afraid of hard work – we prove that every day in the classroom. But building a business is different. You don’t have to figure it out or do it all alone. You can invest in yourself, shorten your timeline, and give yourself the gift of momentum.
