4 Practical Side Jobs for Teachers That Fit a Busy Schedule

If you’re a teacher looking for side jobs to earn extra income without adding more stress to your life, you’re preaching to the choir.

So many teachers want a side job that feels doable, flexible, and aligned with the skills they already have – not something that requires learning a brand-new career.

The good news is that there are realistic ways to earn extra money as a teacher, and none of them require working nights and weekends under someone else’s schedule. These four side jobs are teacher-friendly, work-from-home friendly, and easy to start, even if your time is limited.

1. Sell Your Teaching Resources on Teachers Pay Teachers (TPT)

Selling on TPT is one of the simplest ways to turn your everyday classroom work into meaningful income. If you’ve ever created a worksheet, lesson, or activity your students loved, you already have a product you can sell.

Because TPT is a marketplace full of educators looking for ready-to-use resources, you don’t need to build an audience first. You can start slow and build your store over time. The best part is that once your resource is uploaded, it can continue earning money on autopilot.

If you’re brand new to TPT, my advice is to start with one resource, preferably something that solves a problem in your classroom. Create a clean cover, write a clear title, and add a preview so teachers know exactly what they’re purchasing. You don’t need a huge store to begin. Upload it, hit publish, and you’re officially a teacher-author.

If you want want a step-by-step walkthrough, I have a free training that shows you exactly how to set up your store, upload your first resource, and make your first sale.

2. Offer Online Homework Help or Assignment Support

If you love helping students understand tricky concepts, but don’t want the weekly commitment of private tutoring, this side job could be for you. Instead of standing appointments, students (or their parents) request help only when they need it.

You might record a quick explanation video, check their work, review a project, or give targeted feedback. You can set your own turnaround times and pricing, and many teachers find that even helping a few students per week provides meaningful extra income.

To get started, create a simple Google Form or use a booking platform, like Calendly, so families can submit assignments and questions. Share it on your social media, in your email signature, or through real-world connections. It’s important to start small and adjust your pricing and turnaround time as you go.

3. Work as a Curriculum Proofreader or Editor

Educational companies and some TPT sellers constantly need help reviewing curriculum, which include checking for errors, making sure directions make sense, and ensuring activities actually work.

From experience, teachers are great at spotting misunderstandings, confusing instructions, or misaligned standards. That makes you incredibly valuable to creators who want to deliver polished, classroom-ready materials.

You could start by making a short portfolio that includes examples of materials you’ve edited or reviewed, including your own classroom resources. Then, reach out to teacher-authors you follow, post availability in Facebook groups for TPT sellers, search for jobs on Fiverr or Upwork, or pitch yourself to small curriculum companies. You only need one or two clients to get started!

4. Become a Virtual Assistant for a Teacher-Author or Small Business

Virtual assistants help with tasks like formatting product thumbnails, editing blog posts, scheduling newsletters, organizing digital files, or managing simple admin work. Because you already understand teacher language and curriculum lingo, you’re a huge asset to TPT sellers, coaching businesses, or education-based brands.

This is one of the most flexible teacher-friendly side jobs – you can choose the tasks you enjoy and create a schedule around your existing workload and availability.

Make a list of the the tasks you feel confident doing, such as formatting worksheets, scheduling posts, organizing Google Drive folders, and then create a simple services page using Google Docs or Canva. Share it with teacher-authors you follow or join teacher-business Facebook groups where teacher authors often look for help.

You Only Need One Side Job – The One That Fits Your Life

There isn’t a need for a massive side hustle or another job that drains your energy. You just need a realistic way to use the skills you already have to help you earn some extra money. Whether that’s selling on TPT, helping students when they need it, editing curriculum, or supporting other teacher-authors, each option gives you flexibility, control, and the ability to earn extra income from home.

And if you do want to start selling on Teachers Pay Teachers, remember that I have a free training that shows you exactly how to upload your first resource and start earning without the overwhelm.
