5 Passive Income Ideas for Teachers That Actually Work (From a $2M Digital Biz Owner!)
If you are searching for passive income ideas for teachers that will help boost your income without burning out, you’re not alone! The idea of earning money while sleeping, enjoying a beach day, or spending time with your family might sound like a dream – but it can be possible through passive income.
I’m breaking down five realistic, proven passive income ideas for teachers that I’ve personally used to generate over two million dollars in sales.
Spoiler alert: it does take work upfront, but the payoff is worth it. Let’s dive in!
Let’s get one thing straight: true passive income, like lottery winnings or interest from savings accounts, is rare. Most income streams labeled “passive” require an upfront investment of time and energy.
But the big win? Once those systems are set up, they can earn you money without needing your constant attention. No clocking in. No showing up. Just smart strategy and solid systems. Ready to learn how to make it happen?
1. Sell Your Resources on Teachers Pay Teachers (TPT)
This is my personal favorite and the best starting point for any teacher or homeschool mom. If you’re already creating classroom resources or resources for your own children, why not list them for sale?!
TPT has built-in traffic with hundreds of thousands of educators searching for materials every day. But here’s the catch: you can’t just throw up a worksheet and hope for the best.
You need training on how to list, title, and optimize your resources to get found in search – and that’s where I can help. I offer a free 20-minute video training that will help you start your TPT journey.
2. Sell Resources on Your Own Website
Once your TPT store is established and earning consist money, it might be time to branch out and sell directly from your own website using platforms like WordPress (with WooCommerce), Shopify, or Squarespace.
However, keep in mind that you’ll be responsible for your own traffic, customer service, and sales tax. This route is more complex and isn’t the best for beginners.
3. Create a Low-Ticket Digital Product
Creating a low-ticket digital product is perfect for teachers that are ready to expand or pivot their brand. Low-ticket offers are usually under $97 and can include mini-courses, PDF guides, or templates.
Can I let you in on a little secret?! They don’t even have to be education-related! You can build a brand around any passion you have (like baking sourdough bread!).
With the right setup (like SEO, Instagram, and email marketing), these digital products can run on autopilot.
Example: My Hey Digital Product Playbook sells for $97 and made $30K in 5 months — no ads.
Don’t know where to start? I have a free training that will walk you through on how to create a 4-figure digital product!
4. Create an Online Course
This is my biggest moneymaker by far – it can be for you too!
I currently run The Resource Academy, an online course that teaches educators how to create and sell teacher resources on Teachers Pay Teachers (TPT).
With the right audience and marketing strategy, online courses can easily generate five or even six figures. Courses are scalable, meaning you create the content once and sell it over and over. You’re no longer trading hours for dollars!
Again, you don’t have to create a course about teaching. These are some other top niches for online courses right now:
- Health: fitness programs, gut health, holistic healing, mental wellness
- Money: budgeting, paying off debt, investing for beginners, starting a side hustle
- Relationships: parenting, co-parenting after divorce, marriage support, dating over 40
Before you build your course, it’s important to validate your idea. Don’t spend months recording videos only to find out no one wants to buy it. Instead, pre-sell your course or offer a live beta version. If people buy before it’s fully built, you’ve proven there’s demand.
I bet I know what you’re thinking… You don’t have a website or an audience. Well, that isn’t a problem at all! You can learn the exact steps I used to hit $5K with my first course right here!
5. Start a Membership
Memberships offer recurring income but aren’t always truly passive. You need to keep members engaged with new content or support. I’ve tried two models in the past:
Product-based membership: I found that this didn’t work well because it offered products already available on my TPT store.
Course + Coaching model: There is more potential with this model. You do have to offer ongoing support, monthly coaching, or bonus content.
I want to be 100% honest – unless you love creating monthly content or coaching, this might not be your best fit.
BONUS: Even More Passive Income Options!
Looking for even more ways to earn passive income without creating full-blown courses or memberships?
These bonus ideas are perfect for teachers and moms who want to diversify their income streams with low-effort, but high-reward options.
- Affiliate Marketing: Promote tools you love and earn commissions (Kajabi, Amazon, Opt-in Monster, etc.)
- Monetize Your Content: YouTube and podcasts can be monetized once you grow an audience
- Print-on-Demand Products: Sell custom designs on t-shirts, mugs, and more using platforms like Printful or Redbubble

Passive income as a teacher is not impossible – it’s possible, profitable, and incredibly rewarding. But it does require planning, strategy, and some upfront effort.
Whether you’re starting with TPT or dreaming of a full-blown online empire, the key is to take action and build systems that work while you rest.
